Dental Implants

Are you looking for a reliable, long-term solution you can count on to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth? Dr. Gregory Bauer provides dental implant restorations to help you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile that is functional and aesthetic. Find out why patients throughout Lakewood, CO, trust our friendly dental team to provide the care they need…

What Are Dental Implants?

Implants are the most trusted and reliable tooth replacement solution in dentistry. They are made up of three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the restoration. Once placed into the jaw, the titanium posts mimic tooth roots and fuse with the surrounding tissue. Dr. Bauer coordinates with some of the finest oral surgeons in the area to place the implants. Once you are fully healed, you’ll return to our Lakewood, CO, dental office to receive your restoration and complete the process.
Implants go through the gums and into the jawbone, allowing you to replace missing teeth from root to crown.

Why Dental Implants Are the Superior Choice

Long-Lasting

After getting dental implants, you’ll likely never have to worry about them again. With proper care and maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. However, your restoration will eventually need to be replaced, making it important to stay on top of your routine dental exams at our Lakewood practice.

Jawbone Retention

Just one missing tooth can drastically affect your jaw and cause the tissue to weaken over time due to bone atrophy. This can cause you to look older than you are and give your face a sunken appearance. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that can prevent jawbone recession.

Restored Function

Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew or properly enunciate words. Dental implants restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently. You don't have to worry about your restorations slipping out of place the way traditional dentures sometimes can.

Boosted Self-Esteem

Implant-supported restorations look and feel like natural teeth and are designed to seamlessly blend in with the rest of your smile. Patients enjoy higher self-esteem and no longer feel the need to hide their smiles or feel self-conscious about their appearance.

The Dental Implant Treatment Process What to Expect

Consultation

Dr. Bauer will conduct an in-depth evaluation to learn about your treatment goals and determine if implants are right for you. He uses X-rays to examine your teeth, gums, and jaw. If he determines implants are the best solution for your missing teeth or tooth, he will recommend a trusted oral surgeon to perform your surgery.

Preparatory Procedures

Before beginning the implant process, any preparatory procedures such as bone grafting will be performed by a specialist. Once your gums have fully healed, the implant process can begin.

Implant Placement

The implant dentist will administer anesthesia to numb the area and ensure your comfort at all times. A small incision is made along the gums to access the jaw. The titanium posts are then carefully inserted into the jawbone.

First Healing Period

It will take around four to six months for the area to heal after implant placement. Over time, the titanium posts naturally fuse to the jawbone, locking them into place and creating a solid foundation.

Abutment Placement

After healing is complete, you will return to the dentist for abutment placement. The process is fairly simple and involves attaching the abutment to the titanium post.

Second Healing Period

It will take around two weeks for the implant area to heal after abutment placement.

Impressions

You will return to our office in Lakewood to begin planning and designing your restoration. Dr. Bauer will take digital impressions of your mouth to create a crown, denture, or bridge that closely resembles natural teeth. The impressions are sent to an off-site dental lab, where technicians will create your stunning restoration.

Restoration Placement

Once the restoration is ready, Dr. Bauer will attach your custom crown, bridge, or denture to the implant for results that look and feel like a real tooth.

Imagine Your Life With Dental Implants

Smiling Man

Smile With Confidence

If you have a missing tooth, you probably don't like smiling for photos, and you may have mastered the art of covering your mouth when you laugh. After replacing your tooth with a dental implant and a natural-looking restoration at our Lakewood practice, you'll love smiling. This can help you come across as more friendly and joyful.

Woman brushing teeth

Bite and Chew Normally

Patients who choose traditional dentures or bridges often have to change the ways they bite and chew to keep their restorations in place. On the other hand, when you attach your prosthetic teeth to dental implants, they'll be fastened directly to your jawbone, allowing you to bite into all of your favorite foods without a second thought.

Easy Maintenance

Traditional dentures can be a hassle for a number of reasons, but cleaning and maintaining them may be the worst of all. Meanwhile, implant-supported restorations can be treated just like natural teeth. You can bite and chew without worrying about them slipping out of place, and you can brush and floss your teeth like normal.

What Are the Risks of Dental Implants?

The surgical procedure to place the implants involves the same risks as any type of oral surgery. These risks include infection and negative reactions to anesthesia. Dr. Bauer only partners with trusted and experienced oral surgeons in the Lakewood area, so you can be confident that your procedure will be conducted as safely as possible.

There is a very small risk of implant failure, meaning the titanium implant fails to integrate with the bone. When this occurs, it's usually because the patient was not a good implant candidate in the first place, due to factors like poor bone density or tobacco use. Dr. Bauer will conduct a thorough evaluation during your initial consultation, and he will only recommend you for implant treatment if he is sure you are a good candidate.

Dental Implant FAQ

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

Some insurance plans will offer partial coverage for dental implant treatment, while others will not. If implants themselves are not covered, certain preparatory procedures or restoration costs may be. Insurance coverage for implant treatment can be confusing. Our team in Lakewood will help you review your policy so you can be sure to maximize your benefits.

Is it painful to receive dental implants?

Your implant placement procedure will be conducted with local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel any discomfort during the surgery. If you are particularly nervous about implant surgery, we can help you find an oral surgeon who offers sedation, which can help you achieve deep relaxation during your treatment. After the implant surgery, you will likely experience some swelling and tenderness for a few days, but this can be effectively managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

Why are implant dentures better than traditional dentures?

Implant-supported restorations are superior to traditional dentures for several reasons. First, implant-supported restorations are connected directly to the jawbone, so they never slip or slide while you are speaking or eating. Second, because implants connect to the jawbone and replace tooth roots, they keep the bone strong and healthy, which reduces your risk of additional tooth loss and prevents you from developing a sunken facial appearance.

Should I remove my unhealthy teeth and get implants?

Our dental team in Lakewood, CO, believe that natural teeth are always preferable to artificial teeth. If there's a chance to save your natural teeth, our dentist will recommend that route first. However, if your teeth have experienced extreme decay or breakage, removing the teeth and beginning dental implant treatment may be a viable option.

How do I choose an implant dentist?

If you are considering dental implants, you should work with a respected dentist who will take the time to educate you about implant treatment and treat you with respect. Dr. Bauer is recognized by several professional organizations, and he excels at making his patients feel comfortable and valued. Plus, he uses natural-looking restorations that can give you a beautiful, confident smile.
