Root Canal Treatment

Untreated tooth infections not only cause pain, but can lead to tooth loss or serious health problems if the infection spreads.  At Bear Creek Family Dental in Lakewood, CO, Dr. Gregory Bauer can perform a root canal to relieve pain and save your tooth. His gentle root canal treatment makes root canals no more painful than a dental filling.

Is This an Emergency?

Infected root canals can cause excruciating pain. If you are suffering, call now for an appointment at our Lakewood, CO, dental office. Dr. Bauer will rearrange his schedule so that you can be seen as soon as possible.

Treatment Is Virtually Painless AND CAN PREVENT TOOTH LOSS

Benefit from Gentle Techniques

Dr. Bauer uses gentle techniques and local anesthesia to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible. Most patients find that root canals are no more uncomfortable than getting a filling and can provide relief from the pain caused by an infection.

Stop the Need for Extraction

During a root canal, Dr. Bauer can remove the infected tissue while preserving the healthy exterior. This process maintains the proper function and appearance of your smile.

Avoid Other Health Issues

When left untreated, a dental infection can spread and affect surrounding teeth and gum tissue. A severe infection can eventually cause the deterioration of your jawbone, which will affect the stability of your entire smile.

Root Canal Procedure

Unsure if It’s a Root Canal Infection? Request a Consultation

Do you have a toothache, either mild or extreme? Or are your gums swollen? Maybe there's no pain but you noticed a pimple-like bump on your gums. All of these can be signs of an infection.

Even if you’ve suffered extreme pain and it has disappeared, you should still be examined since a root canal infection doesn’t disappear even if the pain has.

Using advanced techniques and technology, Dr. Bauer can assess your mouth at our Lakewood, CO, office to determine if a root canal is the source of your problem and treat the remaining infection so it doesn’t spread to other teeth.

If you have questions and want to avoid the added costs of seeing an endodontist, feel free to leave us a message online or call for a consultation:

Friendly, caring, professional. Everything you would want from a family dental practice. The practice is not near where I live, but definitely worth the drive. Highly recommend.

Can I Put Off Treatment?

Timely treatment is important to avoid an extraction and more costly dental procedures. A root canal infection will not heal on its own. If you are unsure what to do, leave us a message and we'll be in touch.

Show Me How a Root Canal Is Treated

The interior of your teeth is filled with a soft tissue called pulp. If you have a deep cavity, a crack, or some other damage, the pulp can become infected. Bacteria will multiply in the pulp and damage the tooth. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other areas of the face, neck, or head, and even enter the bloodstream.

Do Root Canals Hurt?
Fact vs. Fiction

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation for pain in popular culture. The truth is that it is the infection that causes the pain. The root canal treatment is what provides relief from the pain. Anesthesia and modern dentistry make getting a root canal as painless as getting a filling. Your tooth may be a bit sore after the procedure, but over-the-counter medication is generally all that is needed to make you comfortable.

Timely Treatment Avoids Future Damage

Timely treatment to remove the infected pulp prevents the spread of the infection. If caught in time, a root canal treatment can avoid an extraction and the tooth can be restored with a dental crown, which will also strengthen it and help avoid future damage.

Can My Tooth Be Saved?

Dr. Bauer will do everything he can to save a tooth. However, if there has been extensive damage from bacteria, the tooth may be too weak to justify a root canal. There also must be enough outer tissue (enamel and dentin) remaining to support a crown. If the tooth has a large cavity or damage such as a crack, extraction may be a better choice

What Are My Restorative Options?

If tooth extraction is recommended, the dentist will likely recommend a dental bridge or dental implant to fill the gap. Implants offer several advantages, including the preservation of healthy bone tissue. However, in the case of wisdom teeth, there is no need for a replacement as wisdom teeth are not necessary for the healthy function of your mouth.

The Pain Stopped… Do I Still Need a Root Canal? Yes, You Still Need a Root Canal

The fact that the pain stopped indicates how far the infection has progressed. At this point, the infection has killed the nerves in the tooth that send pain signals.

But the infection is still present and causing damage. If left untreated, the infection can spread to your gums and other teeth, as well as your bloodstream, which is a serious health problem.

To avoid further spread, Dr. Bauer can perform root canal treatment, just like an endodontist, and remove the infection from the tooth's interior.

What to Expect During Treatment

Bear Creek Family Dental in Lakewood offers gentle root canal treatments. Like an endodontist, Dr. Bauer uses the most advanced dentistry techniques and dental tools for precise diagnoses and treatment of root canals.

Step One

To ensure your comfort, the dentist will apply local anesthesia before the procedure.

Step Two

An access point is created so the dentist can reach the pulp in the interior.

Step Three

The soft pulp is removed from the main chamber and its roots.

Step Four

The interior is disinfected. If the tooth structure is weak, posts may be inserted into the root canals to strengthen them.

Step Five

The interior is filled with a rubber-like substance and then sealed.

Step Six

A crown is typically placed to restore and strengthen the tooth and avoid future infections. Dr. Bauer uses the finest materials to create beautiful and long-lasting crowns that look incredibly natural.
